HOMELESSNESS TRANSITIONS

PHILIP’S STORY

Philip had been rough sleeping, on and off, for two years. We were aware of him through our Rough Sleeper work with partnership agencies but he was very difficult to engage. In March, we received a referral from HMP Leicester via our Prison Pathway and went to visit him prior to his release. It became apparent Philip was vulnerable and had several complex issues. Due to Philip’s previous behaviour he was banned from the Falcon Centre and Exaireo Trust but wanted to remain in Loughborough.

Prior to release from custody, we spoke with Charnwood Borough Council and started a Choice Based Lettings application. Philip attended an appointment on his day of release, we applied for benefits and made an appointment to see his GP for support with his mental health, using The Bridge as a ‘Care Of’ address.

Unfortunately, Philip had to return to rough sleeping upon release but he maintained attending weekly appointments. During this time we supported Philip with access to food, showers and clean clothes as well as maintaining other appointments and accessing his GP.

With permission, we liaised with Philip’s Offender Manager and we worked closely to ensure Philip was offered as much support as possible and a referral was made to NACRO Housing.

Philip received an offer of accommodation via NACRO in May. We were then able to access a ‘No Second Night Out’ bed for Philip to give him a break from rough sleeping and access regular food and showers before moving into his own tenancy.

Philip is doing very well, he is accessing ongoing support and feels safe in his new home.
